Art Assignment - Episode 04

Early on in his career, Jasper Johns had a dream in which he was painting an American flag. This inspired him to make several versions of the flag within different media (painting, drawing, printmaking) including the Three Flags drawing from 1960 we discuss in this episode. His personal commentary on the American flag is visible but subtle (in our opinion), allowing the viewer to assign their own meaning to the work.

The many, varied flag works by Johns has inspired us to create our own personal flags.

So for this week’s Art Slice Art Assignment, we are asking you to try it out! What would your flag include? Text, patterns, symbols? What colors would you use (if any)? The possibilities are endless!

You can use any materials you have at your disposal. No reason to go out and buy artist materials. Use office supplies (Stephanie’s version includes post-its and white-out tape) or make a digital one (see examples).

Show us your flag by submitting it to artslicepod@gmail.com!
