Bonus: Among Equals - The Indigenous Group of Seven
We are super excited to share this series - by way of our Canadian podcast friends at Once Upon a Time in Hollywood North - about a group of artists known as the Professional Native Indian Artists Incorporation (PNIAI) or as they were dubbed by the press: the Indigenous Group of Seven.
This was a big deal since the OG Group of Seven at the time were super famous Euro-Canadian painters so this put respect on the Indigenous Group’s name - especially since Indigenous artists were still thought of as less than their white counterparts and their work was still seen as anthropology rather than art.
The PNIAI artists (and some of their works!) include:
Joseph Sanchez - “Spirits Are Watching” 2021
Alex Janvier - “Morning Star” 1993
Daphne Odjig - “Escape” 1984
Norval Morrisseau, “Conquest of the Thunderbird”, 1982
Jackson Beardy - “Birdwind” 1976
Eddy Cobiness - “Down by the Bay” 1975
Carl Ray, “Spirit”, 1973
✨Already, we are just blown away by their works and stories - we truly can’t wait for the rest of the series!
At the end of the series we’ll do a lil wrap up episode on some of our favorite works from the series✨
Be sure to subscribe to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood North so you don’t miss an episode!
We’d also love to know which works you are digging from the seven - let us know!
